Short-term health insurance is also sometimes called temporary health insurance. It is designed to cover you for a short period of time ranging from 30 days to 12 months. Approval is usually given within 24 hours of application.

When applying, there is termination date to be set, determined by the length of time you need to be covered. Sometimes, you can nominate a monthly billing option, which may give you the option to opt out before the termination date.

This type of insurance should only be considered a stop-gap insurance plan, to cover for a temporary period during which you may not have permanent insurance. For example, you may be changing jobs or you may be a graduate awaiting approval for a permanent plan. Also, you may need the cover during your new employer’s probationary period.

Normally, it is easier to get a temporary plan than a permanent only. Coverage is usually determined by the answers to several questions such as whether you have a current health plan set to expire, whether you are pregnant, whether you have been declined coverage previously and whether you have had treatment for serious medical conditions.
